Boys Basketball Championship
By: Megan Simone
On February 8th, the Boys 7/8th basketball team won the championship. They pulled out the win against Dirksen, 27-26. This game really meant a lot to the team. In the season their record was 5-1. They had many ups and downs. In the middle of the season, they lost their point guard because he transferred. Also, some kids had disciplinary issues and could not be on the team anymore. For all their games, the team was winning by the people who showed up. Winning this championship game felt really satisfying to the team. All the players on this team gave everything they had into the season. They all have evolved over the course of 3 years in basketball. It felt good to bring this trophy back to Prussing especially with this group of guys.
Prussing’s New Teachers
By: Jesenia Garcia
There are three new teachers at prussing this year. Ms. Ahern is an eighth grade English language arts teacher and Ms. Donnawell is a fourth grade teacher. It is Ms. Donnawell's first year teaching at Prussing. Ms. Donnawell graduated from Prussing and is excited to come back. She likes to scrapbook, help kids, and try new things.
Ms. Ahern has previously taught at a school on the south side of Chicago and decided to teach at Prussing because it is a level one school and she lives close. She taught as a bilingual teacher and helped work with students and other teachers. She plays the back pipes and likes to take long walks around Wilson and Portage park. She wants to help students do better. Both teachers are excited to be at Prussing.
Prussings Right At School Club By:
Adrianna Molina
For Prussing after school some students can’t walk home by themselves because they’re too young or parents don’t allow it, so prussing has right at school club where students go to the lunchroom and wait until their parents come pick them up. Children have many activities to do like doing their homework, playing games with the coaches, board games, chatting with friends, and more, but before they start doing any activities students first put their school bags in baskets so things are organized and neat. After they’re done with putting their things in the baskets they get in line and get snack from the cafeteria. When students are done eating they’ll have to help clean up then the coaches start getting ready with the games, if one of the students doesn’t want to do an activity they can start on homework, draw,or talk with friends. If a student does need help with their homework they can have help with one of the coaches. This right at school is really helpful for students who don’t get a lot of help or having trouble with not understanding when they’re at home doing their homework. When the day is almost over parents have to pick up their child when the school is about to close at 6 to 7 o’clock.
Prussing Coffee Shop By:
Sereen Baker
The Prussing coffee shop has been a student-run business for a few months now. If you are unaware it is a project that was first brought up last year as a way for students to learn how to run and take care of a business. This has taught students to have a responsibility, to show up when it’s your time to work whether it's early in the morning and later in the afternoon. Students have learned how to work together when in a tough situation. This year there was a tremendous amount of people who would volunteer to work at the coffee shop along with having a lot more customers. The coffee shop is located next to the security desk, you should be able to see it as soon as you walk through the main door. The times that the coffee shop is open are 7:15 a.m to 8:10 a.m. Times in the afternoon are 12:45 p.m to 1:15 p.m. Another thing that has recently been updated was the menu. The students now have more options to choose from when it comes to buying the snacks there. There are now chips, granola bars, fruit snacks, Oreo's, and a lot of other things. This year we were also fortunate enough to have coffee given to us by The Goat for a cheaper amount. According to Lauren Higueros, who has worked for two years for the Prussing Grind “ I wanted to first join the entrepreneur club because I saw it as a good opportunity to create something nice for the school and for something the community could all work on. I felt like I had a big role in the community, and that this was something new for the school that I wanted to be apart of.” The Prussing Grind Coffee Shop was clearly a new project and it was a project that took a lot of time and contribution. This year we as workers have grown along with the business. We know that this project wasn’t always going to be easy, even though there were some bumps along the way, with the help of teachers and students we have the successful business run by local students.
