By: Collin Chea
’m interviewing Mrs. Arnowitz who has been a music teacher at Prussing Elementary School for many years and is one of my favorite teachers at prussing. Mrs. Arnowitz has organized plays and talent shows that were amazingly entertaining. I'm going to ask her questions about her life as a music teacher and a new play she recently wrote.
What made you want to become a music teacher?
I started playing the piano at the age of 5 and loved to play and sing with my family and friends. So, I continued to play piano through high school.
What University did you graduate from?
After high school, I applied to a music major in the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and earned my masters degree from depaul.
What is it like teaching classes from different grades?
She is always busy developing a music curriculum for 9 different grade levels . It's hard to keep track of changing . She changes her major grade level every hour of every day . I prefer upper grades because I like seeing their growth
So, recently you made an announcement about a new spring play . What is it called and what will it be about?
The show we are doing this spring is called Disney spectacular and involves Disney music over the years.
What are some words of wisdom you would like to say to the person reading this article?

Newsroom - Interviews
The Life of an Immigrant
By: Sana Hadari
In 2000, my mom moved to America from Pakistan, the country that she had lived in her whole life. I interviewed her to understand the differences between Pakistan and America and what she misses about Pakistan.
Q: What’s your name?
A: Sadaf Haidari
Q: Where did you grow up?
A: Karachi, Pakistan
Q: Why did you leave Pakistan?
A: I got married and my husband lived in the U.S., so I moved.
Q: Did you ever regret leaving Pakistan?
A: No; I felt fine because half of my family was in the U.S.
Q: What are some things you miss about Pakistan?
A: My friends, the rest of my family, and the food.
Q: Have you faced any racism or any discrimination?
A: I have faced racism and I usually ignore it, but there was one time that left me shocked. Basically, I was in my alley and I was about to park my car, when an old man was driving through the alley, and as I was parking my car, the man shouted, “go back to your country!” This left me shocked because things like this didn’t usually happen to me before.
Q: How is the U.S. different from Pakistan?
A: There are many things that are different. One example would be that the weather is much colder here.
Q: Which one do you like more, Pakistan, or the U.S.?
A: I like Pakistan, but when I was there because my family and my friends played outside, interacted with our neighbors, etc. Now, Pakistan is similar to the U.S. because people don’t play outside, they go on technology a lot, and they don’t interact with their neighbors.
What I thought about the overall interview: Overall, I learned that moving to a different country can be scary sometimes, and you can face a lot of hate, but things can always get better. I also learned the hardships of adapting to a new setting.
The Military Experience
By: Jaslyne Tran
On February 23rd, 2020, I interviewed my father, Frank Tran, about his experience in the military and his opinion on joining it.
Q1: Why did you join the military?
A: I joined the U.S. Marines because I wanted to make a contribution to the country that has sheltered my family from Vietnam’s communists after my father was released from a communist reeducation camp. The U.S. also has given my family a chance to rebuild and have a better future.
Q2: What was your role/job in the military?
A: I was a Marine sergeant. In the last job, I was with the Marine Wind Support Squadron 274 in the Second Marine Air Wing located in Cherry Point, NC. Besides war skills, I was a metal shop leader: I helped build temporary airfields, troop shelters, repair military weapons and equipment, and other construction projects. I also trained new welders and auto mechanics.
Q3: What kind of training did you do?
A: The training included learning about the Marine’s history, the U.S. Constitution, military justice, close combat training, marksmanship, and warfare. In addition, I was trained in military specialized technical training, which was related to metal working.
Q4: In the military, what were your strengths and weaknesses?
A: The biggest strength for me was that I had been through a tough time when I was a young adult. That helped me go through the training easier than the others. My biggest weakness or challenge for me was communication and cultural shock. It was very hard for me to live among Americans and to understand my fellow Marines, which included taking and giving command.
Q5: Would you encourage others to join the military?
A: I definitely encourage people to join the military because we will help to protect our country from foreign invaders. The military mission is to protect all Americans and support other people in the world from disasters. In addition to joining, the military can support you by paying for college, and can give you jobs such as a nurse, dentist, medical doctor, scientist, engineer, technician, pilot, teacher, etc.
From this interview, I learned that joining the military can be rough and tiring. But, joining the military is worth it- you can earn many things such as scholarships, jobs, etc. and fight for your country.
